1985 Autocar: we work on any truck
If it runs diesel and needs help, we'll show up. Age is not a barrier: classic, vintage, or modern.
Mobile Western Star Repair
On-site diagnostics and repair for Western Star 49X, 47X and 57X trucks and the older 4700, 4900 and 5700XE. Detroit or Cummins, DT12 or Allison: we test the fault where the truck is parked and tell you what failed before parts get ordered.
What We Handle On-Site
Detroit engines pair EGR with a One Box that holds the DOC, DPF and SCR. A DEF quality or dosing fault walks the truck from an amber warning to a speed limit and, left alone, to a 5 mph inducement (SPN 3712). We find the cause before it gets there.
A cracked EGR cooler can use coolant with no puddle under the truck, then show up as white exhaust or a rough idle. We pressure test the cooling system and check the exhaust side before blaming the head gasket.
The DT12 clutch actuator runs on chassis air. Moisture past a neglected air dryer, leaks, and low supply pressure cause hard shifts, RPM flare, and failed clutch learns. We check the air side before condemning the transmission.
The 49X uses a multiplexed electrical system with control modules in the dash or the back-of-cab E-Vault. We trace crank/no-start, charging, and module communication faults.
Why Call a Mobile Western Star Tech
Western Star builds mostly vocational trucks: dump, mixer, bulk haul, and heavy haul. When one goes down it is often on a muddy site or loaded on the shoulder, where a tow gets slow and complicated. A stuck DEF doser or a DT12 that will not pick a gear can usually be diagnosed right there.
Western Star is a Daimler Truck North America brand, sister to Freightliner, so a 49X with a DD15 and DT12 shares a lot with a Cascadia. Frequent parked regens on a Detroit are often a failing doser, not a bad DPF, so we test dosing before the filter comes off.
Western Star Models
Introduced in 2020 to replace the 4900. Detroit DD13, DD15 or DD16 or Cummins X12 or X15, behind a DT12-V or DT12-VX, an Allison 4000, 4500 or 4700, an Eaton Fuller manual, or an Eaton Endurant.
In production since early 2022 as the lighter Class 8 for weight-sensitive work like mixers and bulk haul. The DD13 is standard, with the Cummins L9 or X12 optional, paired with an Allison or a DT12-V.
The 57X replaced the 5700XE in 2022 and was retired in 2025. It runs Detroit only (DD13, DD15 or DD16) with the DT12, so it shares engine and One Box diagnostics with the 49X. Older 4700, 4800, 4900 and 6900 trucks can carry a Detroit, Cummins, or Cat engine depending on year and spec, so text the VIN or an engine tag photo and we will confirm what is under the hood.
How We Work
Model, Detroit or Cummins, transmission, warning lights, and whether it is in derate. A photo of the dash helps.
Jobsite, yard, terminal, or roadside across the Charleston area. No tow needed to start.
NOx and DEF quality sensor readings, doser operation, DPF pressure, EGR and coolant data, and transmission air pressure show where the fault really sits.
A NOx code can come from wiring or an exhaust leak. A failed clutch learn can come from air supply. We confirm the cause first.
What was checked, what failed, and the recommended next step, in writing.
Western Star recalled about 21,560 49X and 47X trucks for a battery-to-starter stud at the frame rail that can short, and some 2022–2024 49X trucks for a suspension hanger missing welds. We check the VIN for open recalls.
Call or text Lowcountry Diagnostics any hour and we will come to the truck.
Yes. We diagnose Western Stars running Detroit DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines and Cummins L9, X12 and X15 engines, including EGR, One Box and Single Module aftertreatment, DEF dosing, NOx sensor, and coolant loss faults.
On a Detroit engine, 5 mph is the final step of a DEF or SCR inducement. It usually starts with a DEF quality, dosing, or NOx sensor fault that was left alone. We read the codes, test the doser and sensors, and fix the cause so the truck does not fall back into derate.
Often, yes. Many DT12 complaints trace to the air supply: leaks, a worn air dryer letting moisture reach the clutch actuator, or low pressure at the transmission. We test air supply and run a clutch learn before calling it a transmission failure.
Yes. We are mobile and come to your jobsite, yard, terminal, or roadside location throughout the Charleston area, 24/7. Call or text (843) 310-0995.
Tell us where the truck is and what it is doing. A photo of the dash lights, the VIN or engine tag, and any fault codes help us bring the right tools. For truck-down or derate calls, calling or texting is fastest.
